This cultivar is very similar to ‘Sango kaku’ and is possibly a seedling from it. Its characteristic is the colourful winter shoots, which are lighter red than ‘Sango kaku’ on the upper, exposed side and yellow-orange on the lower, sheltered side. ‘Japanese sunrise’ is very tolerant of full sun and grows into a narrow, upright, vase-shaped, flat-topped tree up to 7m (23ft) tall.
