Bokashi Food Waste
What is Bokashi composting for food waste?
A: Bokashi is a simple indoor composting system that uses beneficial microbes to ferment all types of food waste — including meat, dairy, and cooked foods — with no smell and minimal mess.
What types of food waste can I put in a Bokashi bin?
A: Bokashi handles nearly all food scraps:
Fruit & vegetables (raw or cooked)
Meat, fish & bones
Dairy (cheese, yogurt, etc.)
Bread, pasta & rice
Coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells
Avoid: liquids like soup, moldy food, or excessive oil.
How does Bokashi break down food waste?
A: Bokashi ferments waste using a mix of Effective Microorganisms (EM). These microbes prevent rotting and odor by rapidly acidifying the waste, which preserves nutrients and prepares it for soil breakdown.
Do I need special equipment for Bokashi composting?
A: Yes — you need a Bokashi bin (airtight, with a drainage tap) and Bokashi bran (EM-infused mix). These are usually available as starter kits or can be made at home with the right materials.
How do I use the Bokashi bin?
A: Add food waste in layers.
Sprinkle Bokashi bran after each layer.
Press down to remove air.
Keep the lid tightly closed.
Drain the liquid (Bokashi tea) every few days.
What is the white mold I see in the bin?
A: White mold is a good sign! It means the fermentation process is working properly. Avoid green, blue, or black mold — those signal contamination or too much air exposure.
What do I do when the bin is full?
A: Let it sit sealed for 2 weeks to complete fermentation. Then:
Bury it in your garden soil.
Add it to a compost pile or worm farm.
Use a soil factory if you don’t have garden space.
Can I compost food waste with Bokashi if I live in an apartment?
A: Absolutely. Bokashi bins are compact, odor-free, and indoor-friendly, making them ideal for apartments, flats, and balconies. Pair with a small soil factory or drop off at a local community garden.
What should I do with the liquid (Bokashi tea)?
A: Drain it every few days. It’s full of nutrients and microbes:
Dilute 1:100 with water for plants.
Pour undiluted into drains to reduce odors and buildup.
Use quickly — it doesn’t store well.
Why choose Bokashi over traditional composting for food waste?
A: Bokashi:
Accepts all food waste, including meat and dairy
Works faster (2–4 weeks total)
Is clean, odor-free, and indoor-friendly
Produces a soil amendment rich in nutrients and microbes
